Dubai is a fascinating and unusual city that looks like its thumbing its nose at the desert. Today, Dubai is winning, with sky scrapers rising out of the ground like the launch of ballistic missiles. In a few years I think the desert will will win it all back. The architecture is a no expenses spared mix of Dallas and Vegas.
By the way, if you are a westerner I don't recommend visiting during Ramadan (as I did) for two reasons. Firstly at that time of year it is HOT, as in 50 Celsius and near 100% humidity. Also restaurants are closed from sunrise to moonrise at night. Some tourist sites are closed or limited during this time.
